<\/strong>Pret\u00adty much every\u00adthing! Study\u00ading plants is incred\u00adi\u00adbly varied\u2014identifying them, their his\u00adto\u00adry over the last few mil\u00adlion years, spe\u00adci\u00ada\u00adtion process\u00ades, genet\u00adic rela\u00adtion\u00adships, their ecol\u00ado\u00adgy\u2026 and so much more. And then, of course, many flow\u00ader\u00ading plants are sim\u00adply beau\u00adti\u00adful to look at! <\/p>\n\n
<\/strong>I\u2019ve been inter\u00adest\u00aded in plants ever since I was a child\u2014I\u2019ll nev\u00ader for\u00adget the walks through the forests of Basel-Land\u00adschaft with my grand\u00adfa\u00adther; I knew exact\u00adly where to find the lily-of-the-val\u00adley. In high school, much to our biol\u00ado\u00adgy teacher\u2019s delight, I was the only one inter\u00adest\u00aded in plants\u2014so study\u00ading botany seemed like a nat\u00adur\u00adal choice! <\/p>\n\n
<\/strong>I\u2019m par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly fas\u00adci\u00adnat\u00aded by the small, pur\u00adple-flow\u00ader\u00ading gen\u00adtians with five petal lobes (some\u00adtimes clas\u00adsi\u00adfied as their own sub\u00adgenus,\u201cGen\u00adtianel\u00adla\u201d<\/em>). They have been poor\u00adly stud\u00adied in Switzer\u00adland so far. I\u2019m inter\u00adest\u00aded in where they occur and how they\u2019re relat\u00aded to one anoth\u00ader. From this, we might be able to deduce where they sur\u00advived the ice ages and from which loca\u00adtions they sub\u00adse\u00adquent\u00adly spread again. <\/p>\n\n
<\/strong>The fresh air\u2014and when you\u2019re far\u00adther away from noisy streets, the peace and qui\u00adet, too! I love being out\u00addoors, hik\u00ading up moun\u00adtains (at least as long as my legs will let me!), dis\u00adcov\u00ader\u00ading beau\u00adti\u00adful landscapes\u2014and iden\u00adti\u00adfy\u00ading plants along the way. I find it espe\u00adcial\u00adly sat\u00adis\u00adfy\u00ading to suc\u00adcess\u00adful\u00adly (re)discover species. And some\u00adtimes you come across the most excit\u00ading things in places that seem \u201cbor\u00ading\u201d at first glance! <\/p>\n\n
<\/strong>Since I was work\u00ading in anoth\u00ader field, I hadn\u2019t been able to pur\u00adsue field botany since the late 1990s. After I retired, giv\u00aden my pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal back\u00adground, it made sense to get back into it more inten\u00adsive\u00adly. The Flo\u00adra Raet\u00adi\u00adca project served as a very wel\u00adcome cat\u00ada\u00adlyst for this. Fur\u00adther\u00admore, I find the idea of pub\u00adlish\u00ading a \u201cnew edi\u00adtion\u201d 100 years after the first Flo\u00adra of Graub\u00fcn\u00adden to be very mean\u00ading\u00adful. I am inter\u00adest\u00aded in the changes in the flo\u00adra that have occurred dur\u00ading this peri\u00adod and the pos\u00adsi\u00adble rea\u00adsons behind them. <\/p>\n\n
<\/strong>I record as many plants as pos\u00adsi\u00adble and, with\u00adin the 5x5-kilo\u00adme\u00adter square that I pri\u00admar\u00adi\u00adly over\u00adsee, I focus espe\u00adcial\u00adly on the \u201cflash squares.\u201d The Low\u00ader Enga\u00addine, where I\u2019ve lived since my retire\u00adment, is very well doc\u00adu\u00adment\u00aded botan\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly. That\u2019s why I\u2019ve recent\u00adly been focus\u00ading par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly on taxa that are dif\u00adfi\u00adcult to iden\u00adti\u00adfy, in order to bet\u00adter doc\u00adu\u00adment their distribution\u2014such as the small\u201cGen\u00adtianel\u00adla\u201d species<\/em>or the Rhaet\u00adian rose. I\u2019m also hap\u00adpy to share the iden\u00adti\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion guides I\u2019ve com\u00adpiled with enthu\u00adsi\u00adas\u00adtic indi\u00advid\u00adu\u00adals who may not yet be very famil\u00adiar with plant iden\u00adti\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion. <\/p>\n\n
<\/strong>The oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adty to inter\u00adact with ded\u00adi\u00adcat\u00aded indi\u00advid\u00adu\u00adals and field botany spe\u00adcial\u00adists, to par\u00adtic\u00adi\u00adpate in joint map\u00adping activ\u00adi\u00adties, and to feel that I\u2019m doing some\u00adthing mean\u00ading\u00adful even after retirement\u2014and per\u00adhaps even con\u00adtribut\u00ading to research.<\/p>\n\n
<\/strong>Gath\u00ader\u00ading plants in the rain and cold (in mid-June\u2026) in a \u201cBlitzquadrat\u201d above Samedan\u2026and dis\u00adcov\u00ader\u00ading there some beau\u00adti\u00adful\u00adly bloom\u00ading pin\u00adnate vio\u00adlets (Vio\u00adla pin\u00adna\u00adta<\/em>)!<\/p>\n\n
<\/strong>The flo\u00adra of Graub\u00fcn\u00adden is gen\u00ader\u00adal\u00adly incred\u00adi\u00adbly diverse and abun\u00addant! I find avalanche tracks par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly fas\u00adci\u00adnat\u00ading. They\u2019re often teem\u00ading with species and can yield sur\u00adpris\u00ading dis\u00adcov\u00ader\u00adies, such as large pop\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtions of fire lilies or feath\u00ader-leaved vio\u00adlets. Unfor\u00adtu\u00adnate\u00adly, these areas are usu\u00adal\u00adly steep and lack trails\u2014so they\u2019re not exact\u00adly \u201ccom\u00adfort\u00adable\u201d for botan\u00adi\u00adcal explo\u00adration\u2026! And that\u2019s why they\u2019re, unfor\u00adtu\u00adnate\u00adly, some\u00adwhat under-researched\u2026<\/p>\n\n
