Flo\u00adra Raet\u00adi\u00adca is inves\u00adti\u00adgat\u00ading this ques\u00adtion through com\u00adpre\u00adhen\u00adsive map\u00adping and com\u00adpar\u00ading his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal records of plant sight\u00adings with cur\u00adrent occur\u00adrences. Thomas Wohlge\u00admuth, co-pres\u00adi\u00addent of Flo\u00adra Raet\u00adi\u00adca, pro\u00advid\u00aded answers to these ques\u00adtions on Sep\u00adtem\u00adber 16 dur\u00ading the \u201cRen\u00addez-vous am Mit\u00adtag\u201d event host\u00aded by the Graub\u00fcn\u00adden Nat\u00adur\u00adal His\u00adto\u00adry Muse\u00adum. About 60 inter\u00adest\u00aded atten\u00addees lis\u00adtened to his pre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtion.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Few\u00ader farm fields, more urban areas and forests<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal pho\u00adtos, Wohlge\u00admuth vivid\u00adly illus\u00adtrat\u00aded how our ances\u00adtors prac\u00adticed agri\u00adcul\u00adture on a small scale and with a great deal of man\u00adu\u00adal labor through\u00adout Graub\u00fcn\u00adden.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the past hun\u00addred years, the fields sur\u00adround\u00ading the vil\u00adlages have large\u00adly disappeared\u2014and with them, tra\u00addi\u00adtion\u00adal crops such as flax, hemp, and rye.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In many val\u00adley areas, wet mead\u00adows and nat\u00adur\u00adal riv\u00ader land\u00adscapes have dis\u00adap\u00adpeared, and mead\u00adows that were once nutri\u00adent-poor are now fer\u00adtil\u00adized even at high ele\u00adva\u00adtions. There has been an increase in built-up areas, roads, farm access roads, and also forest\u00aded areas. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Over fifty new species in forests<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Changes in habi\u00adtats are also reflect\u00aded in the plant com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty. In the cur\u00adrent map\u00adping efforts, new species are emerging\u2014particularly along trans\u00adporta\u00adtion routes, rivers, and oth\u00ader rud\u00ader\u00adal sites\u2014including many neo\u00adphytes. Some are spread\u00ading rapid\u00adly and are there\u00adfore being specif\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly con\u00adtrolled, such as the glan\u00addu\u00adlar impa\u00adtiens and Japan\u00adese knotweed.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the species found in rich fens\u2014which are much more com\u00admon today than in the past\u2014only a hand\u00adful of new species have been added, such as the thread-leaved speed\u00adwell. More than 50 new species now grow in the forests, includ\u00ading sev\u00ader\u00adal tree species such as Dou\u00adglas fir and red oak, which were inten\u00adtion\u00adal\u00adly plant\u00aded, as well as shade-tol\u00ader\u00adant neo\u00adphytes such as the autumn cher\u00adry.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, many species of for\u00admer agri\u00adcul\u00adtur\u00adal crops have dis\u00adap\u00adpeared or become less com\u00admon, includ\u00ading, for exam\u00adple, corn cock\u00adle and sev\u00ader\u00adal species that grow in flax fields: flax cock\u00adle, flax silk, and flax rag\u00adwort.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sur\u00adpris\u00ading\u00adly, sev\u00ader\u00adal dozen of the numer\u00adous neo\u00adphytes already known around 1900 have dis\u00adap\u00adpeared. They were appar\u00adent\u00adly unable to become estab\u00adlished. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Blue\u00adber\u00adries are par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly wide\u00adspread<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The map\u00adping also reveals sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant dif\u00adfer\u00adences in the dis\u00adtri\u00adb\u00adu\u00adtion of the approx\u00adi\u00admate\u00adly 3,000 plant species. Accord\u00ading to Wohlge\u00admuth, about 400 species have so far been record\u00aded in only a sin\u00adgle 5 \u00d7 5\u2011km square and are there\u00adfore among the species that are par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly rarely record\u00aded, such as the moor gen\u00adtian at Hei\u00add\u00adsee or the dyer\u2019s woodruff at Ell\u00adhorn. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the oth\u00ader end of the spec\u00adtrum are the blue\u00adber\u00adry and the crest\u00aded water-crow\u00adfoot: both have been found in 84 per\u00adcent of the sur\u00adveyed areas so far and are the most wide\u00adspread species.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Map\u00adping will con\u00adtin\u00adue through 2028<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The more thor\u00adough\u00adly today\u2019s plant pop\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtions are doc\u00adu\u00adment\u00aded, the more accu\u00adrate\u00adly we can track how the flo\u00adra of Graub\u00fcn\u00adden is chang\u00ading. Flo\u00adra Raet\u00adi\u00adca will there\u00adfore con\u00adtin\u00adue its map\u00adping efforts through 2028.
